Kids Back-To-School Party Cupcakes, Annual Picture and Breakfast Traditions

Our last Friday play group/pool party before the first day of school... where did the summer go? To make it a little special we made some colorful school-themed crayon cupcakes!

The kids helped frost and decorate two dozen strawberry cupcakes with bright colored sprinkles. Then they stuck a new school crayon into each cupcake for fun:
The first morning before school starts, since preschool, I take my son and daughter's picture as they hold the number of their age/grade. My daughter just started first grade! Last year she held a big "K" for kindergarten:

To make the first back-to-school breakfast special last year I made pancakes shaped like the first letter of their name. This year I made their latest favorite – french toast. A custom menu waited for them at the counter with breakfast entrees listed inside:
Last year we also made paper links to count down to the first day back to school, but this year they weren't very excited about school, so we didn't want to make it come any sooner than necessary! What traditions do your kids like?

Sweet traditions. I let my children pick something special to bake with me before we begin school for the year. I only have one fourth grader now (what?!)and he chose caramel cake. So tomorrow we'll begin our cooking adventures.

Ooh, I like! I'm going to steal these ideas. The crayon cupcakes are so sweet, Jeanne! And Mommy's Menu is a great tradition. Two more weeks to preschool in our house! You're helping me start well.

My husband's family took a picture on the front porch each day they went back to school. It's fun to look back at them! I love your "mommy cafe" idea! I might have to make a "wifey cafe"!

I wanted to thank you too, for the lovely comment you left on my blog post about going back to school with a purpose. That was really encouraging to me. Thank you!

WOW. Can some of your magic inspiration dust rub off through the internet?

Nice to have a party before the school starts. Sounds like they had fun with those sweet cup cakes and crayons. Is that for real, like the crayons, or are they edible? Anyways that is such a great idea, moms out there would be appreciative with the thought of celebration before school comes.

You are amazing Mamma!

I love the number in the picture idea. I always take a picture, but never thought about including the grade number. That's fab!

Since the first day back is also, by default, my first day too, we don't do special breakfasts. We are usually running around like crazy trying to get out the door on time!

These are some of the most wonderful traditions! Hubs and I are not parents yet, but I look forward to having my own Mama's Cafe someday!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great idea! I used your idea to make cupcakes for my little one who started preschool this year (and linked to your post): http://mommynosocks.wordpress.com/2011/09/14/crayon-cupcakes/
