Their initial toppers were cut out of wrapping paper.
The only hiccup is my daughter didn't want to tear any links off!! She likes it as a door decoration! :-)
PS: Help, seasoned moms ... I've planned a special breakfast for the first morning and I'm ready to take their pictures holding their age 'number' [as I did last year at the start of preschool] ... anything else I should do? I'm taking suggestions! :-)

What a cute way to get them excited for their return to school. Love the pattern letters at the top :)
How cute! We have done this for Christmas, but not for beginning of school.
The only other thing we have done on first day of school is take pictures of them getting on the bus, or waiting for the bus, or just standing in front of the door with their backpacks and smiles! I'm sure it will be a great morning for all!
I have never seen this done before. What a great way to simplify time for kids!
I don't know when your 1st day of school is, so this comment might be coming too late, but a neat idea we like to do is to choose a verse for each child for their 1st day/ coming year. For us, this year's were Psalm 118:7 for our new 1st grader, and Romans 12:2 for our 4th grader. I write them out and cutely display them on the breakfast table and we talk about them.
Other ideas include 1) the night before school starts, let kids eat their dinner out of their new lunch boxes for fun, 2) send a love note and a family photo or mommy and child photo in their lunchbox on the 1st day, 3) welcome them home from school on the 1st day with a special treat (i.e. candy) in an (open/ flap up) envelope that is decorated like a house ("home sweet home"), that you re-use every year on the 1st day as tradition. :)
I love special touches like this and hope you have fun showering your children with your own special touches and that you all have (had?) a great 1st day! :)
Thanks so much for the ideas! We had a great first day!!
We made a countdown til school calendar too, but our's was different.
My kids had their first day yesterday...something I have always done on the first day (since my oldest, now a senior in high school) was take them to school on their first day, instead of letting them ride the bus. And I always make pancakes on the first day as well...this year was chocolate chip, but in year's past we've made blueberry too).
Oops, meant to say - that I was stopping by from SITS!
